One of Robert's 3 children brought him to his first Bikram yoga class, which he describes succinctly as "Hell". Don't let this description throw you off - he might be joking. After all, this 55 year-old electrical contractor counts fishing and cracking jokes, in addition to hot yoga, among his favorite activities.
Robert knew nothing about Bikram yoga before he tried it, and his answer to whether or not he'd ever imagined himself doing this a year ago is an emphatic "Never!" Since starting Bikram yoga, however, Robert has seen some amazing changes in his mobility, so he makes a point of coming to 4-5 classes per week. "It's all about choices," Robert says knowingly when asked how he makes time for his yoga practice.
Increased mobility and less joint pain are some of the benefits Robert has experienced, and, in turn, these makes performing tasks at work, climbing stairs, bending down and kneeling easier. People around him notice his spryness and the ease with which he moves now. It's not so much that Robert is doing things he couldn't or didn't do before, as he puts it, "I'm just doing things easier."
Robert's goals are simple and profound: to continue to lose weight and to keep his yoga practice consistent with the ultimate goal of "living life more enjoyably." Robert recently attained two major milestones in his yoga journey: he completed the May 30-day challenge and he went shirtless in the yoga room for the first time!
Robert has some words of advice for others looking to live life more enjoyably through practicing Bikram yoga: "A real big help to me has been the emphasis on breathing." He also offers a warning, perhaps directed at other hard-working dads out there: "Don't close your eyes during savasana, as you could fall asleep." Sounds like there's a story there! If you see Robert around (as you likely will with his 4-5 class per week practice), ask him if he's ever fallen asleep in class or just ask him more about the gifts his yoga practice has brought him.
