For the past two years Sanne and Terry have had a standing Friday night date: yoga, sushi and wine.
They are both a little in awe of that fact that they now enjoy every part of their Friday night dates (and a much needed break from their six beloved, but active, foster children). Terry claims it was ego that got him through his first class, after he finally let his wife drag him to Bikram yoga: "I truly thought that I was going to die that evening, but I was determined not to show weakness to my wife and run from the room."
She must've been impressed because she has continued to go on yoga and sushi dates with him!
Terry also recalls how much admiration he had for everyone else in the room when he began, "I was so impressed with how the other practitioners were able to stay focused with their yoga practice and get the benefits from it. It took me a while to convince myself that this was for me, and, after about a year, I have become a regular yogi and truly enjoy my time in the room and how far I have come with my practice."
Sanne says she also struggled with her first class, "I remember feeling quite frantic and claustrophobic in the room, but managed to stay. Looking back at my first couple of months, I am in awe at how far I’ve come. I am far more comfortable and confident in the room, but I know I still have miles to go. There is no yoga perfect, just lots of yoga practice!" Sanne adds, "I am always so excited for the new students in the room, knowing that this can truly change their lives in such a positive way, as it has mine."
Aside from escaping their busy house, Sanne and Terry love the health benefits of Bikram yoga. Terry's job as a senior FedEx driver is both stressful and physically-demanding. He's noticed his improved flexibility, endurance and stress releif on the job. His golf game has also benefitted from a regular yoga practice; he claims a greater range of motion and the ability to play 18 holes without fatigue or discomfort.
Sanne describes why a regular yoga practice is important to her: "Bikram yoga has given me more time for myself, to focus on my well-being - spiritually, emotionally and physically." As well, "the three studios (Bikram Yoga Langley, Bikram Yoga Maple Ridge and Yoga360) have such a friendly and clean atmosphere that we always look forward to our next workout."
Although they love their yoga classes together, they are always encouraging friends and family to join them and experience the health benefits of Bikram yoga. "So often, friends will tell me they don’t have the time for yoga." Sanne sighs and explains why, with her own children and the needs of her six "super energetic" foster children, she make time for yoga. "I pay myself first (in that I mean time for myself), so that I am better able to give to my family." She likens taking care of her own physical and mental well-being to "putting on your own oxygen mask before helping others with theirs."
Sanne hopes to convince more friends to join them at yoga, until then, though, they enjoy having their daughter, Melissa, join them for class when she's not pursuring her studies at Emily Carr University.
Although yoga might be their regular, number one activity for health and peace of mind, Sanne and Terry continue to enjoy hiking: "We have hiked the West Coast Trail once a year for about 10 years running, as well as taken in some beautiful scenery from the top of Golden Ears mountain a few times."
So what will Sanne and Terry's big Valentine's Day date be this year? "This year, Valentines Day falls on Friday, so see you at Bikram!" Sanne laughs.
